Catfish Fingerling Production
The farm maintains 3,000 African catfish Brooders a high quality breed sourced from Jambo fish farm. The fecundity or egg production in the African catfish is much higher than in Nile tilapia. One 500g female catfish will release about 30,000 eggs per spawn (in a month). Survival is usually very low and to sustain production at 100,000 per month, the farm will continue to hold 3000 brooders (2000 males and 1000 females). The large number of males is required because for each breeding exercise, a male is sacrificed to provide milt for fertilizing the eggs externally. African Catfish can be reared even in small plastic with an area of 10m2.
