Demonstrating how to integrate fish with crop farming
At Mwea Aquafish Farm we integrate livestock with fish and crops with fish. Currently we have 500 birds (layers) that produce 12 egg trays per day. We also grow quality bananas, vegetables and root crops alongside fish. Ponds serve as water storage structure and, as such, become a key asset of water supply to crops. We sell the idea that Ponds add value to other farming activities: water from ponds can serve domestic and livestock water supplies as well as irrigation for high-value crops and vegetables. Waste accumulated in pond as sludge is pumped, when draining a pond, into vegetable gardens to increase vegetable production. The farm operates a Zero-discharge water policy and any water due for release is pumped back into the farm to irrigate crops.
